Balancing Work and Life

Many workers sense a feeling of loss of control over their lives. Often families with children have two breadwinners working full time to cover financial needs. Learning tips for balancing work and life can reduce that stress level.

Weekday mornings are probably the most hectic times for mom, dad, and kids. Sticking to a consistent morning routine can have everyone leaving the house feeling happy and confident to face the rest of the day. The morning routine actually begins the night before by having things in place before bedtime. Spend a few minutes the night before to have the kid’s clothes laid out and ready for morning. Have them do it if they are old enough, or get their approval so any problems are taken care of. All backpacks and next day lunches should be ready to grab and go. Be showered and dressed before waking the children. Help the children as needed according to their age, and keep breakfast simple.

Be open to letting your children do things for themselves as they become old enough. Gradually having them take on responsibility will give them a feeling of independence, and will instill some good habits for later years. It is a must that two parent families share the daily responsibilities to avoid resentment that comes about when one does it all. This is an especially important factor for showing children that families work together and everyone pitches in.

In the last few years, employers are recognizing that giving their employees flexible time schedules is one of the most productive ways to run the workforce. If things get too hectic at home, inquire about job sharing or partial work at home flexibility. This can mean the difference between quitting the job and remaining with the company.
