Making a Budget

Creating a budget allows you to keep track of your income and expenses over a certain period of time. But budgeting is much easier said than done. Often people have difficulty maintaining a budget because they start it with unrealistic estimations and/or expectations, making it very difficult to keep up with.

You must be completely honest with yourself. Firstly, you must learn to set aside money in the form of savings. Without it you will live from paycheck to paycheck forever without getting anywhere. Then you must calculate your rent or house-note. After that comes your utilities and groceries. Then you have to pay your credit cards. If you cannot pay on time, your credit score will be affected and hamper your ability to get more credit.

Unfortunately, budgeting isn't easy to follow unless one decides ahead of time that they will be disciplined and follow through. Sometimes credit counseling helps one get from 'here' to 'there.' If one has a hard time sticking to a budget, this might be the way to go.

It is quite easy to become overwhelmed with debt. Sometimes it becomes a big enough problem to prompt one to file for bankruptcy. If you decide this is the way you want to go, you need to be aware that it can affect your credit anywhere from seven to ten years after, depending on where you live. Also wage garnishment is possible in some states.

It is difficult to set a budget and stick to it, especially if you are not honest about where you are financially, and are not willing to make the necessary sacrifices. But if you can do it, it will help keep you on the right track.
