People all over the world carry credit cards. Some of these people use their cards wisely by taking them out only for emergencies or paying off the bill in full each month if they do need to use them. Others have become trapped with high balances, high interest rates and feeling like they will never get ahead. Here are some of the dangers you need to be aware of about credit cards.
If you do carry a high balance, you need to be careful not to go over your limit. Many credit card companies will charge you a fee of $29 to $39 for doing so. You also want to be sure you pay at least the minimum and preferably more by the due date because again, you may be charged a fee. If you miss a couple or more months of payments, this may cause your interest rate to skyrocket. You should be aware of the default rate on your card and make sure payments are made in a timely manner. Many companies are offering as low as zero percent for a specific amount of time, usually for balance transfers. In this case, you need to be aware that once the time is over, your rate will go up to a higher rate. So, if you can't pay the balance by the allotted time, don't do it. Also, beware that if you take advantage of this offer with a balance on your current card, the balance will be paid off first, of course at a higher rate. If you do a balance transfer, many times there is a one-time fee of three to five percent of the amount you are transferring.
These are just a few of the dangers of having a credit card that you need to be aware of; especially if you carry a balance from month to month. Credit card companies have a way with making their products attractive to consumers, but beware.
