How to Make a Budget

In today's uncertain economy it is important to make smart spending choices. Costs continue to rise, but salaries stay the same, so it is more important than ever to create a budget that you can work and stick with. Budgeting is a scary word for many, but it is really just a financial plan. A good budget allows you to work with the money you have with minimal month to month struggle. The key is to make your budget work for you.

When planning your budget, remember that it will take a couple of months to really work for you. You will need to get used to living within your financial means, and that means a certain amount of adjustment time. Be patient, budgeting pays off. If you are married, work together to make the budget work. The first thing you need to do is make expenditure lists. Begin with your set bills, and create categories for variable expenses, as well. Include mortgages, loans, utilities, cable and internet bills, and any other bills you pay every month.

Make your best estimate when adding expenditures such as groceries and entertainment. Be specific so you can see where your money goes. Tally and record all monthly income. Use an average if that total varies, and compare it to your monthly expenses. Once you see the difference between what you earn and what you spend, you need to adjust your budget. Trim the excess expenditures. Get rid of unnecessary expenses such as daily latte's and lunch money. Learn to pack a lunch and make your own coffee. Budgeting means making a few lifestyle changes that can make a huge difference in the long run.
